HISTORY

Father Junipera Serra was the padre who was in charge of building the mission. It took two years to build this mission.  The mission's first buildings were made of adobe bricks.  The first building was used to store wood and reeds.  The interesting facts about the mission is there walls were 6 feet thick.

DEVELOPMENT

The tribe that lived close was the Chumash.  Before the mission was built they hadrly had houses for eachother.  When the mission came they had a better life to hunt and sleep.  Life at the mission could be very dangerous.  One time, the padres and their flock had to take their stuff and run to the hills to hide from a pirate who was robbing the missions.

THE CHUMASH INDIANS

Life on the mission was very hard. They raised grapes, oats, wheat and oranges. They also raised cattle at the mission. The Chumash made made leather products, wine, olive oil, baskets and clothing. They also had a dance, but it was banned at the mission. Mission San Buenaventura will never be able to be a full region because they did not have enough food and clothing.
